Brett Bothma competed in the Half Ironman in Taupo in the build up to the 2017 Ironman New Zealand. By competing Brett is raising money for Cure Kids and the exceptional work they do.
What an epic day! Faced my fear of open water and managed to finish my first Half Ironman in 5h48m. The day seemed to rush by, and before I knew it, I was at the finish line. I had awesome support from Jolandie, Ben, John, Tania, Kirsten and all the kids. They were there every step of the way with banners and screaming to keep me going.
As in business, the race had ups and downs but with hard work you always seem to get the outcomes you are after. I think moving forward I will view challenges in life a little different. One thing that comes to mind was Jolandie (my wife) asking me about 30 min before the start, why I was so calm! My answer was, I have prepared for this for the past nine months there is not much else I can do now. I hope my team will think of this as we go into the New Year, prepare now for the coming year and you will all hit your targets and goals!
So this was the last event before Ironman New Zealand on the 4 March 2017, this is the big one and will take a lot of open water training and more work on both the bike and run. I am excited at the thought of the challenge, very much the same as the coming year. Tech 5 is ready to pounce in 2017 with some new faces joining our team and some old faces excited about the future. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
For your info an Ironman is a 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run all in one day!
