How to nail interview questions “on the fly”

Applied for a job and the phone rings. When you answer, you know the interview questions will be next!
You may have just submitted your resume via email or calling into a job agency. Your phone rings, you pick up the call and it is the Hiring Manager/Recruiter calling, but you are out and about. What should you do?
Don’t panic and start with a lot of “words to fill the gap” while you get your mind in interview mode. Take a breath and either ask for a moment to get to a quiet spot or ask if you can take their number and call back in 5 minutes. This will give you your preparation window.
Your goal from the phone call is to get yourself to the next step in the recruitment process. That maybe a face to face meeting with the agency consultant or a meeting with the Employer Recruiter/Hiring Manager.
- Stand up as this helps you focus your attention and gives your voice more command, energy and enthusiasm
- Find a quiet spot
- Smile – you will come across friendly and more positive
- Provide relatively short answers
- State that you are genuinely interested in the position and that you would like to progress your application further and elaborate on your experience through a face to face interview. Ask if this is possible.
